What is a Cosmetologist?
- A certified Hairstylist is a specialist in the art and science of Beauty Culture.
- Cosmetology is one of a cluster of Human Service related occupations involving the knowledge and care of the skin, scalp, nails, hair and their Cosmetics.
- Cosmetologists are known by several names: Hairstylist, Hairdresser, Operator and Barber to name a few
Learning Approach
- First Level courses involve a balance of theory and practical experience (includes mannequin work)
- Second Level Courses involve in-depth theory (building on basics), mannequin work, working on live models (customers), learning about chemical services, reception desk duty/laundry duty, responsibility for your own equipment and developing your communication skills with customers.
- Third level courses involve learning advanced methods building on the first and second levels. In addition it prepares students for the final school exams and provides an awareness of what to expect in the work place and the two years (3000 hours) of on the job Apprenticeship Training)
Work Experience
- The cosmetology lab is a working salon serving customers. This offers an opportunity to gain valuable experience in a "real" work environment.

Who should enroll?
- Anyone interested in a career in Cosmetology
- Anyone interested in acquiring knowledge and skills that will assist them in a career.
Who should not enroll?
- Anyone with allergies to cosmetic ingredients (hair, skin or nail cosmetics.)
- Anyone who is color blind will have problems with the hair coloring portion of the course.
Apprenticeship
- Successful completion of this program with a 70% or higher average will fulfill Manitoba Education and Training's requirement for 1400 hours of in school training needed by those entering the two years (3000 hours) of on the job apprenticeship training.
- An apprentice program allows a person to earn a salary while learning on the job and is the only route which leads to certification as a journeyman Hairstylist (Interprovincial License--red seal)
Career Opportunities
- Hairstylist: chain salon, cruise ship salon, department store salon, high fashion salon, home salon, hospital salon, neighborhood salon, senior citizen salon or stage makeup and hair stylist.
- Specialist: makeup, manicurist/pedicurist, permanent wave technician, hair color technician, manufacturers representative, hair cutting/shaping, chemical hair relaxer/straightener technician, wig and hairpiece (involves measuring, cutting, fitting, styling repairing and selling)
- Cosmetology salon manager owner, school teacher/instructor and school administrator.
